About the IP Address Checker Tool

This tool is an online diagnostic utility that automatically identifies your current "global IP address" from the network environment through which you are connected to the internet, and displays the assigned provider (ISP) information and geographic location information. No special setup is required. Simply accessing this page allows you to instantly determine your current connection status.

Why is it different from the ipconfig result?

The reason the IP address displayed when you run ipconfig in the Windows Command Prompt differs from the IP address shown by this tool lies in the difference between the roles of a "private IP" and a "global IP" in a network.

  • Private IP address (local IP): This is like an "extension number" assigned inside the router in your home or office to identify devices such as PCs, smartphones, and printers.
  • Global IP address (public IP): This is the "outside line number (your address on the internet)" that the router receives from the provider when accessing the outside world called the internet.
Technical Background (NAT: Network Address Translation)

In modern household and organizational networks, a single global IP address is commonly shared and used by multiple devices. The technology that makes this possible is called "NAT (Network Address Translation)". For that reason, the result shown by ipconfig on each individual device (the inside line) is always different from the IP visible to external websites (the outside line).

Glossary

IP Address (Internet Protocol Address)
This is a number used to identify the communication destination on the internet. It determines where data should be sent and serves as an address in the digital world.
ISP (Internet Service Provider)
This is a business that provides internet connection services. OCN, So-net, SoftBank, and Rakuten Broadband are examples of this.
ASN (Autonomous System Number)
An autonomous system number. This is a globally shared number used to identify the large network groups that make up the internet.

Main Use Cases

  • Remote work access restrictions: Useful for reporting your own IP when configuring settings that allow logins only from specific IP addresses (IP restrictions).
  • Checking a VPN connection: Useful for checking whether your IP address changes as intended and whether your anonymity is maintained while you are connected through a VPN.
  • Isolating network problems: Useful for checking whether there is a problem with the provider or region you are routing through when connection speeds are slow or certain sites cannot be accessed.
